Protect yourself and your PIN
June 20, 2008
Identity theft and fraud are not restricted to online banking practices. Sunflower Bank reminds you to remain vigilant while using ATMs, and observe the following safety tips when visiting your ATM. Also, be aware of common ATM scams.
- Be cautious when choosing an ATM. Don’t select an ATM at the corner of a building. Avoid blind spots. Choose a well-lighted location.
- Be aware of the ATM surroundings. Be wary of people offering help, or anyone sitting in a parked car nearby. When leaving an ATM, make sure you are not followed. If you are, immediately drive to a police station or alert authorities using your cell phone.
- Do not use any ATM that looks unusual or offers unfamiliar options.
- Do not let people look over your shoulder as you enter your PIN. Memorize it. Never write it on the back of your card. Never re-enter your PIN if the ATM keeps your card. Instead, contact your bank.
- Position yourself at the ATM to shield your PIN and card number. Be mindful of the people in line behind you.
- Do not wear expensive jewelry or take other valuables to the ATM.
- Never count cash at the machine or in public.
- If using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, doors locked, and passenger and rear windows rolled up. Leave enough room to maneuver between your car and the one ahead of you in the drive-up lane.
- Save receipts. Do not leave receipts at the ATM or in trash receptacles nearby. Receipts may contain information that can be used to commit fraud.
- Closely monitor all bank statements for accuracy of ATM transactions. Immediately report problems to your bank.
