Spanish instructor Khalila Binns earned the November Sunflower Bank Teacher of the Month Award – and was surprised by dozens of students, colleagues, and Sunflower Bankers who showed up to celebrate the teacher.
Binns received the Teacher of the Month honor after nomination at sunflowerbank.com by several colleagues. Notably, Binns serves as a mentor for incoming teachers, practices sewing with afterschool programs, and includes Spanish meals and cooking tutorials as part of an introduction to Spanish culture in her classes.
“It’s made my day, made my month, made my year,” Binns told Channel 6 News. “And probably, if I’m never recognized for anything else, it’s made my career, too.”
Binns will be one of eight nominees for the Sunflower Bank Teacher of the Year in 2010. Monthly and annual awards are decided by an impartial committee convened by Sunflower Broadband and the Lawrence Journal-World.
Sunflower Bank’s Teacher of the Year is in its fourth year The program honors Lawrence-area teachers with a monthly award based on nominations by students or parents. The 2009-2010 program encourages students and parents to nominate teachers who have made a difference in their lives with a short essay, tribute, or note.
