Sunflower Bank Weekly Market Commentary: June 2, 2025

Each week, our Wealth Management team analyzes the U.S. stock market and bond market activity and news of the previous week, summarizing their findings into a weekly market update report. The key points of this week's commentary, "S&P 500 Turns Positive on Year as Investors See Progress on Trade," include:

  • Broad equity markets rose last week, pushing the S&P 500 back to positive territory for the year. The S&P 500 rose 1.9%, the Nasdaq 100 gained 2.0% and the Russell 2000 increased 1.3% for the week.
  • The holiday-shortened week started out on a strong note after positive call between the US and EU resulted in a delay of proposed levies on EU goods.
  • The core PCE Price Index rose 0.1% month-over-month and 2.5% year-over-year, a welcome sign for Fed officials. Although the rate of inflation nearing targeted levels, the Fed is likely to take a wait-and-see approach given the uncertain impact of tariffs. Futures markets currently expect 50-basis points of cuts this year.
