Weekly Market Commentary: Stocks Rebound In Busy Week of Earnings and Data

Sunflower Bank Weekly Market Commentary: August 3, 2026

Each week, our Investment Committee analyzes the U.S. stock market and bond market activity and news of the previous week, summarizing their findings into a weekly market update report. The key points of this week's commentary, "Stocks Rebound In Busy Week of Earnings and Data," include:

  • Equity markets recovered last week after two weeks of declines as mostly solid earnings from mega cap tech companies boosted markets. The S&P 500 gained +1.1%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose +0.5%, and the Russell 2000 increased +0.1%. Highlights from last week included earnings (Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple), an FOMC meeting, and June PCE inflation.
  • Meta (-8%) reported mixed results, Microsoft (+16%) reported superb results, Amazon (+10%) reported strong results, and Apple (-7%) missed expectations. Meta, Microsoft and Amazon all commented that demand for computing power to train and run AI models is robust.
  • The FOMC voted to hold the benchmark lending rate at a range of 3.50% - 3.75%. However, the decision was not unanimous, and three members voted to raise the overnight rate 25 basis points. Markets were unconvinced by Chairman Kevin Warsh’s post-meeting comments, and the 30-year treasury yield hit the highest level since 2007.
