El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation Partners with Sunflower Bank to Recognize Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month

September 07, 2022

Together with El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation we are pleased to announce the unveiling of a special installation at Sunflower Bank, consisting of artwork created by pediatric oncology patients at El Paso Children’s Hospital. Through this collaboration, the art display will be available for the public to view at Sunflower Bank’ s downtown El Paso branch at 201 E. Main throughout this next year. Additionally, Sunflower Bank has committed $50,000 to support the therapeutic arts program, provided by the El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The mission of the Therapeutic Arts program is to provide patients and their families with the opportunity for self- expression, empowerment, and healing moments through the arts. Art is particularly helpful to relieve stess in children who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment or transfusions for chronic illness or blood disorders. Creativity can be a vital resource in helping patients to cope with an acute illness. Art and healthcare go hand-in-hand as art enhances the healing environment and overall treatment experience.

“Our therapeutic arts program is instrumental in the health and healing of our pediatric oncology patients and their family members, through the many creative opportunities that El Paso Children’s Hospital offers,” said Dr. Cindy Stout, President and CEO of El Paso Children’s Hospital. “We are proud to be the only hospital based therapeutic arts program in the region and are dedicated to providing the highest level of over-all patient care.”

“Sunflower Bank has been a wonderful partner since their establishment in the region,” said Dr. B. Abigail Tarango, Executive Director of the El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Their continued financial commitment ensures our oncology patients can continue to enjoy healing through the arts and other interactive therapeutic activities provided by our child life department, both of which are funded by the foundation and donors like Sunflower Bank.”

“At Sunflower Bank, we are excited to finally come together in-person to celebrate the wonderful work that El Paso Children's Hospital is doing in our community,” said Ernesto Avila, Regional President at Sunflower Bank. “Our mission is ‘Bringing out the best in the lives we touch … Creating Possibility’ and there is no better way to do it than through supporting children – who are the future of El Paso!”
